Epic Colt Cabana article

There is a huge Colt Cabana article on chicagoreader.com, you can read it here: http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/colt-cabana-gets-a-boost-from-his-art-of-wrestling-podcast-and-from-wwe-champion-cm-punk/Content?oid=4326260

PWG: Battle of LA 2011 matches announced

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla have announced the line up for this year’s rendition of their signature one-night tournament, the Battle Of Los Angeles, which will take place on the 20th of August (in Los Angeles, obviously).

So, for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t understand the picture, it will be….

Chris Hero vs Willie Mack

Claudio Castagnoli vs El Generico

Eddie Edwards vs Roderick Strong

Finlay vs PWG World Champion Kevin Steen

Winner of match 1 vs winner of match 2

Winner of match 3 vs winner of match 4

Final (winner of match 5 vs winner of match 6)

Thoughts: Excellent line up. I believe Steen vs Finlay will be the most greatly anticipated match, but any combination of any of these wrestlers could produce a potential show stealer. I’m very pleased to see Hero vs Mack will finally happen (it was scheduled for ASW8 night 2, but Hero ended up challenging for the title instead).

Great Akira Tozawa article in this month's FSM

This month’s issue of Fighting Spirit Magazine features a great article on Dragon Gate star Akira Tozawa. The feature focuses mainly on Tozawa’s year long learning excursion in America (which ended in June), but also details his not-so-smooth four years in the business prior to that.

Stories from Kevin Steen and Jack Evans (regarding Tozawa’s wild behaviour outside the ring) are possibly the highlights of the article, which also includes insight from Chris Hero, Excalibur and Dragon Gate USA/EVOLVE/former ROH booker Gabe Sapolsky.

You can purchase the magazine from WHS Smith and various other newsagents in the UK. Worldwide customers can visit http://www.fightingspiritmagazine.co.uk/ to order it.

Thoughts: The article is well worth the read. FSM does cover the indys and Japan, but its main focuses are WWE and TNA, so it’s awesome seeing a guy like Tozawa getting such a large (4 page) feature dedicated to him.

He is already a much bigger star in Japan than he was before he left. BxB Hulk’s failure to win Open The Dream Gate, and Tozawa’s victory over Shingo (both at the biggest Dragon Gate show of the year; details here: ) make me think that Tozawa may be the man who brings the top title to Blood Warriors for the first time.

FSM is a great magazine, they should employ me.

Another Ring Of Honor match announced

ROH World Championship: Davey Richards (c) vs Roderick Strong

ROH World Television Championship: El Generico (c) vs Jay Lethal

ROH World Tag Team Championship: Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas (c) vs Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli

More Dragon Gate USA match announcements

More matches have been announced for the Dragon Gate USA shows this September.

At the Indianopolis show on September the 9th, Ronin members Johnny Gargano and Chuck Taylor will be facing off with Open The Freedom Gate Champion YAMATO and Masato Yoshino.

At the Milwaukee show on September the 11th, fresh from his first Japanese Dragon Gate tour, AR Fox will return to the USA in search of vengeance on D.U.F, who attacked him at the last DGUSA show. He will be teaming with YAMATO to take on Sami Callihan and Arik Cannon.

Thoughts: Both matches should be great. Ronin going after Junction Three is a good idea. I think we may see Gargano challenge for the Freedom Gate before the year is done.

Review - EVOLVE 9

THE GOOD

Finlay vs Callihan

Brutal match, so stiff and hard hitting, with the story of Sami being out to defeat his idol playing out perfectly. I don’t think Finlay has had the chance to perform at this level in a long time, and he absolutely delivered.

Sami’s selling was brilliant, he really put over the damage done by Finlay’s offence. The Irishman dominating and ultimately winning was not how I expected this to play out, and Sami looked awesome in defeat, as he endured a ton of cringe inducing slams, strikes and submissions.

Overall, an intense match that told a great story. I suspect there will be a rematch on the horizon.

Gargano vs Taylor

Great performance from both men. They had a hard act to follow after the excellent Finlay/Callihan bout, but they managed to pull it off. The match was full of smooth sequences and counters, which emphasised their knowledge of each other very well. It was great seeing two “homegrown” EVOLVE guys headline the show, and they both did the company proud. Did I mention that I interviewed Gargano last week? http://tumblr.com/xk33la52gn

Steen vs Fish vs Davis

Jon Davis is a beast. His sheer ass-kickery takes me back to watching Goldberg when I was a kid. I want to see this guy pushed to the top of EVOLVE.

The match was wild.  Heavy hitting offence and no indication whatsoever of who would win. It was definitely in contention for match of the night.

Kevin Steen (in general)

Steen’s presence and various appearances added a cool “anything can happen” vibe to the show. I loved his destruction of the opening match, and his stint on commentary. Obviously he was a great addition to Fish/Davis too.

Reed & Konley vs Up In Smoke

This was a very enjoyable match, and I was particularly impressed with Scott Reed. Cheech’s shock turn on Cloudy at the end was well executed too.

I must say though, I didn’t buy into Cloudy hanging with Reed. Reed is twice the size of Cloudy, and his sick sit out powerbomb looked like it killed him. Seeing Cloudy execute a missile dropkick a few minutes later took me out of it a bit.

I assume Reed/Konley will become the top tag team now, since they defeated and ultimately disbanded Up In Smoke.

Nese vs Silver

Good match. I wasn’t as into it as a lot of the folks on Twitter seemed to be, maybe that’s just because neither man really connected with me. Good work from both of them though.

Facade & Gory vs Super Smash Bros

This was a good one too. Both teams impressed with their innovative double team moves.

Dunkerton vs Young

I really like Sugar D’s serious character. I appreciate his effort in transitioning to a different persona for his EVOLVE appearances. Like I said yesterday, Young dominated but was upstaged by Dunkerton’s offence, until he delivered his insane turnbuckle headstand into springboard moonsault finisher.

Dorado vs Sanchez

Decent match, but I don’t remember a great deal about it to be honest. I recall liking the ending, with Sanchez abandoning the cover so he could force Dorado to tap, it made him look ferocious.

Win/loss records

I love the emphasis on wins and losses in EVOLVE, it gives every match on the card meaning. With this system, no matter who you have in what match, it will be perceived as important by the audience. It’s something I feel gives EVOLVE an edge over other promotions.

THE BAD

No selling suplexes in the opener

In the opening match, one guy no-sold a german suplex, then the other no-sold a saito suplex. Those moves are sold as being devastating in upper card matches, so seeing the new guys in the opening match  brushing them off is confusing for the audience.

THE QUESTIONABLE

How to make EVOLVE even more unique

This isn’t a criticism, just a suggestion. Like I said earlier, I really like the win/loss record emphasis in EVOLVE, and I feel it separates this company from the pack in big way. The win/loss thing isn’t big in modern American wrestling, but is big in MMA. Another aspect where I think EVOLVE would do well in taking some MMA influence is in sudden finishes.

In MMA, the viewers are gripped from start to finish in every fight as they could all end at any moment (via knockout or a swift submission). This is rarely the case with indy wrestling in 2011, as matches are almost never ended in the first few minutes. A few out-of-nowhere victories in the lower and mid card could go a long way to make the overall show even more exciting.

Overall, I really enjoyed my first EVOLVE experience, and I would definitely recommend the replay! Clicking the picture below will take you to WWN Live where you can get it on demand:

Live coverage: EVOLVE 9 (ippv)

The show will start in a few minutes. I’ll be editing the results and my thoughts into this post as they happen.

Match 1: Bobby Beverley (0-0) vs Eric Ryan (0-0)

No contest: Kevin Steen interfered and killed them both.

Kevin Steen promo

- He took shots at ROH, Jim Cornette, Davey Richards, the commentators, EVOLVE, the rules and regulations, Gabe Sapolsky, El Generico, and basically everything else. He swore a lot.

- Bobby Fish came out. To the ring, I mean.

- Fish lectured Steen about rules and stuff, then they left the ring. I guess either Fish beats Davis then goes on to face Steen at E10, or Steen will cost Fish the match, setting up Fish/Steen at E10.

Match 2: Facade and Gory (0-1) vs The Super Smash Brothers (0-1)

Winners: The Super Smash Brothers (1-1)

Thoughts: Good match. Some excellent double team offense, with Facade and Gory’s Buddy Moonsault, as well as several unique combos from the Super Smash Bros. Also, awesome headstand on the turnbuckle from Facade.

- They were interviewed after the match by Larry Dallas, I think (edit: it was Lenny Leonard).

Match 3: Sugar Dunkeron vs Silas Young

Thoughts: I’m impressed by Dunkerton’s serious approach to this. Comedy is great in Chikara, but a lot of it doesn’t translate well to more serious promotions like EVOLVE. I’m pleased to see him taking a different approach in this company.

- Brutal elbows/forearms from Sugar D there. A hell of a clothesline too.

Winner: Silas Young

Thoughts: I was going to write that although Young got the most offence, Dunkerton’s was most impressive. Then Young finished him with a turnbuckle headstand into a springboard moonsault. Wow.

- I’m enjoying my first EVOLVE experience so far.

- Johnny Gargano (aka the man I interviewed) interrupts Young’s post match interview. Young blamed Gargano for buying him a drink and sending him off the rails.

Match 4: Pinkie Sanchez vs Lince Dorado

- Someone tried to get a “lets go kitty cat” chant going. He failed. I kind of feel bad for him.

- Kevin Steen has joined the commentary team!

Winner: Pinkie Sanchez

Thoughts: Decent match. I liked the finish with Sanchez abandoning the cover to go for the figure four leglock.

- Larry Dallas promo

Match 4: Scott Reed and Caleb Konley (0-0) vs Up In Smoke (Cheech and Cloudy) (4-0)

- Scott Reed nailed Cloudy with a sick sit out powerbomb. I think the commentator said it was called “the Viagra Driver”, though I may have misheard.

- Cloudy shouldn’t have stood up for the rest of the night after that move. He delivered a missile dropkick a few minutes later.

Winners: Scott Reed and Caleb Konley

Thoughts: Brutal double finisher to take out Cloudy. Good match, but Cloudy surviving Reed’s offence earlier on took me out of it a bit.

- Cheech turned on Cloudy after the match. Wiped him out. There’s a match for EVOLVE 10 line up.

Match 5: Jon Davis (0-1) vs Bobby Fish (1-4)

- Steen interferes. Match is thrown out.

Match 6: Kevin Steen vs Bobby Fish vs Jon Davis

Winner: Jon Davis

Thoughts: Great match, full of action. Jon Davis is a beast! He’s becoming one of my favourites on the American scene.

Intermission

Jon Moxley vs Roderick Strong for the FIP World Heavyweight Championship is airing during the intermission.

Match 7: Tony Nese vs John Silver

Winner: John Silver

Thoughts: Good showing from both men. Silver no-sold some pretty big moves from Nese though.

Match 8: Dave “Fit” Finlay vs Sami Callihan

Winner: Finlay

Thoughts: It took two of Finlay’s finisher and a Tombstone to finish Sami off. Solid, hard hitting match. They told a great story. Hopefully we will get to see a rematch.

Main Event: Johnny Gargano (6-3) vs Chuck Taylor (5-3)

- Larry Dallas shenanigans. Gargano gets rid of him.

Winner: Chuck Taylor (ties with Gargano as the wins leader)

Thoughts: Great main event. Johnny and Chuck certainly delivered, and they had a lot to live up to after Callihan/Finlay and the triple threat match.

PuroMania #4 (News from Japan)

Kota Ibushi was successful in his first defence of the IWGP Junior Heayweight Championship. He retained against the former champion Prince Devitt at a DDT show in Tokyo on July the 24th. Ibushi’s next defence will be against Devitt’s tag team partner, Ryusuke Taguchi, at the NJPW ppv on the first of August.

The feud will continue throughout Ausgust, as Taguchi and Devitt hold the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles, which they will defend against Ibushi and Kenny Omega at the second pay per view of the month on the 14th.

The G1 Climax Tournament will begin on the first of August (ppv), and will continue over the following nine shows, culminating at the pay per view on August the 14th. At that show, the wrestler from block A who has the most points will face the points leader from block B in the final (competitors gain two points for a victory, one point for a draw and 0 points for a loss). Notable competitors include IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi, MVP, Shinsuke Nakamura, Giant Bernard, Hirooki Goto and Karl Anderson.

Thoughts: The match where Ibushi defeated Devitt for the title was excellent, so I imagine the rematch was on a similar level. I also wonder whether Ibushi and Taguchi can top their spectacular match from the King Of The Super Juniors Tournament.

The tag team title match will be great too. The reign of Devitt and Taguchi actually began after defeating Ibushi and Omega, back in October.

The G1 Climax Tournament is huge, and apparently gets a great deal of mainstream press coverage in Japan. I’m sure a lot of our American readers will be gunning for MVP or Giant Bernard.

At the Osaka show on the 23rd of July, the legendary Kenta Kobashi made his return to the ring, after being sidelined due to injury since 2009. He teamed with GHC World Heavyweight Champion Go Shiozaki in a near thirty minute match against Jun Akiyama & Akitoshi Saito. Kobashi was pinned ultimately pinned by Akiyama. You can see Kobashi’s entrance here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h35qs_pBdWs&feature=player_embedded

In other NOAH news, the NTV Cup Junior Heavyweight Tag League is well underway. The current standings see the team of KENTA and Yoshinobu Kanemaru tied with Kenou and Kenbai in block A at four points each. In block B, Kotaro Suzuki and Atsushi Aoki are tied with Katsuhiko Nakajima and Satoshi Kajiwara, also with four points each.

Thoughts: It’s amazing that Kenta Kobashi has returned to the ring. Taking the fall too, what a hero. Big win for Akiyama and Saito (especially Akiyama, since it was he who pinned Kobashi).

Neither of the American teams look set to win the tournament as Eddie Edwards and Delirious have 2 points, same with Jack Evans and Aero Star (before anyone points it out, yes, I know Aero Star is Mexican). There are still a few shows left though, so there is still a chance they may climb the ranks.

The ZERO1 Fire Festival 2011 began in Tokyo on the 24th (of July). Zeus and Kenta Kakinuma were victorious in singles action from block A, Hayato “Jr.” Fujita and Atsushi Sawada won their singles matches in block B, so all four men now have two points each. The next show will take place on the 28th.

Thoughts: I love all the tournaments in Japan. So awesome. There will be details on the upcoming Dragon Gate tag team tournament next week.

That’s all for PuroMania 4, see you next Tuesday!

EVOLVE 9 preview

EVOLVE 9 will take place Tuesday night at BB Kings in Manhattan, New York. You can watch it live on ippv at the following link: http://www.wwnlive.com/signup.php?id=456

I’ll be covering the show live here. It begins at 8pm EST (I think).

Johnny Gargano (6-2) vs Chuck Taylor (5-3)

Gargano is currently the wins leader in EVOLVE, which basically makes him the top guy. He defeated Chuck Taylor in their last singles encounter, so Taylor is out to even the score, much to the dismay of their mutual manager Larry Dallas. I interviewed Gargano last week, you can read it here: http://tumblr.com/xk33la52gn

Dave “Fit” Finlay (0-0) vs Sami Callihan (3-1)

This promises to be a brutal battle between two of the stiffest wrestlers around today, the veteran Finlay and “the new horror” Sami Callihan. Anyone who has only seen Finlay’s work in WWE is in a for a treat, as they will see him return from the watered down mainstream to his hard-hitting roots.

Bobby Fish (1-4) vs Jon Davis (0-1)

Despite being one of the most popular wrestlers in EVOLVE, Bobby Fish has only came out victorious in one of his five matches. Perhaps even more shocking is that the beast known as Jon Davis was defeated in his debut! Both men desperately need the win here, in what could turn out to be a show stealing match.

Kevin Steen

Kevin Steen will be making his first appearance for EVOLVE, where he will be given a live microphone! Anything can happen when Steen is around.

Cheech & Cloudy (4-0) vs Larry Dallas’ Mystery Tag Team (0-0)

Player Uno & Player Dos (0-1) vs Facade & Jason Gory (0-1)

Lince Dorado (?) vs Pinkie Sanchez (0-0)

Tony Nese (0-2) vs John Silver (0-0)

Silas Young (2-1) vs Sugar Dunkerton (0-0)

Eric Ryan (0-0) vs Bobby Beverley (0-0)

Kings Of Wrestling - WWE update

Wrestlezone.com has reported that Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli will bypass developmental and debut on the main roster after they sign their contracts with WWE.

Thoughts: After they sign their contracts. Nothing is set in stone yet, but it’s looking more and more likely that the Kings are heading to WWE.

If they do go there, I hope they are successful. They will be a big loss to the indy scene. However, current stars moving on opens up more opportunities for wrestlers lower down the card.

Review - NWA Hollywood Episode 44

From now on, rather than doing dual coverage and a review for episodes of NWA Hollywood, I will just be doing a review. However, I will include the results (in the review).

Results:

Cedric the Hitman defeated Sergio Vega

Hector Canales and Ricky Mandel defeated Los Luchas

SoCal Crazy defeated Joey Kaoss via forfeit

SoCal Crazy defeated Ricky Mandel

Review:

THE GOOD

Main Event

Good main event. This episode did a lot for SoCal Crazy. The spinny lucha move into the crossface was cool. Crazy is a good choice for the TV title tournament final.

Hitman vs Vega

Good opener. Impressive showing from Cedric, and Vega got in some decent flashy offence too.

SoCal Crazy on the mic

Crazy is decent on the mic, and really got a chance to put his character over on this episode, with his comments in the interview that opened the show, and his promo/challenge to Mandel after advancing via forfeit.

Willie Mack Injury Footage

Good call to include footage of his injury at the hands (well, briefcase) of Cedric the Hitman that was alluded to on commentary earlier in the night. Much more effective than simply informing the audience what happened. Also Mack’s selling was great.

THE BAD

I don’t think there was anything on this edition that I would consider bad.

THE QUESTIONABLE

Canales & Mandel vs Los Luchas

The match was fine, highlighted by some cool double team manoeuvres. I criticise this show for a lack of consistency in storylines, which isn’t the case here as this feud has been showcased a lot over the past few episodes. The problem is that no progress has been made with it. Canales and Mandel hate luchadores, which was established in the beginning. That’s it. They’ve had several matches which, although decent, haven’t really furthered the story at all.

Why wasn’t Mack vs Hitman televised?

What we saw of that match was great, I wonder why it has never been aired in full.

Results - Pro Wrestling Evo

Here are the results for Pro Wrestling Evo’s This Is Wrestling! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! show that took place on Saturday night:

Marcellus King defeated Cedric Alexander to become the Pro Wrestling Evo Champion

Team Macktion (TJ and Kirby Mack) defeated Zack Salvation and Caleb Konley

Big Country defeated Jimmy Jack Funk Jr

Arik Royal won a triple threat match (vs Circo vs Trevor Caddell)

Thoughts: Congratulations Marcellus King. I’m not sure whether that was Alexander’s first or second defence.

I believe the show will be available on DVD soon, I’ll share details of how to purchase it.

Here are a couple of videos from the show (which I also got from pwponderings). The first features the introductions for the main event (Chris Shore from prowrestling.net making his ring announcing debut), the second is the aftermath of the show:

Thoughts: Not only a great treat for the fans in attendance, but a great moment for Gregory Iron. Punk and Colt really put him over. For those that don’t know, Iron suffers from a condition called “cerebral palsy”.

Thanks to televisomniac for passing that along.

Results - PWG: Eight

I predicted that the World title match would just be a singles match in the absence of Davey Richards. I was wrong.

Claudio Castagnoli defeated Chris Hero to retain the PWG World Championship, but was then defeated by Kevin Steen. Steen is the new PWG World Champion!

CIMA and Kevin Steen defeated the Young Bucks

RockNES Monsters defeated the Dynasty

Peter Avalon defeated Rick Taylor

Roderick Strong and Alex Shelley defeated El Generico and Ricochet

Cage defeated Gatson

Kevin Steen defeated PAC

Sources: b2u in the PWG forum, and Chad Simplicio

Thoughts: What a night for Kevin Steen! Wow, three victories and a world title.
